Ajaccio is the capital of the Mediterranean island of Corsica - famously the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is situated in a sheltered position on the West coast of the island and enjoys a climate very similar to the French Riviera (Corsica lies about 200 miles South East of Marseille); indeed, one of our pick of the best places to stay in Ajaccio would not be out of place there either! The town has excellent connections to the French mainland via air and sea, and is a popular cruise ship stop.
Forget the alarm clock, in Ajaccio, you can wake to the gentle tooting of an ocean going vessel, heading out on another adventure. A spectacular view of the water can be the first thing you see after blinking awake in the morning, as ocean views flood in through your huge windows. Grab a plate from the breakfast buffet, before enjoying it on the balcony, and looking down over ports filled with gleaming white yachts, and tiny wooden fishing boats. Cool off with a refreshing dip in the water of your rooftop swimming pool at your Ajaccio hotel, or by relaxing with some in-room WiFi.
During the nineteenth century Ajaccio and Corsica itself became a popular destination for high society - along with many other resorts on the South of France. In World War Two, Ajaccio was the first French town to be liberated and Corsica earned the title ‘righteous among nations’ due to the fact that no Jew was executed or deported.
The city is notable for landmarks like Ajaccio Cathedral, Ajaccio Citadel, and Chapelle Imperiale. The city's natural setting is picturesque, including the beaches and such places to visit as St. Francois Beach and Trottel Beach. Exploring the waterfront is a top activity, and Port de Plaisance Charles Ornano is one place to visit.
